Valley of Flowers
A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for 600+ species of alpine flowers. The valley comes alive during the monsoon for one of India's most beautiful trekking experiences.
About the Valley of Flowers trek
The Valley of Flowers is one of India's most celebrated Himalayan treks — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where alpine meadows burst into colour during the monsoon. Spread across the upper Bhyundar valley near Joshimath, the trail passes through oak and rhododendron forests before opening into a landscape carpeted with rare Himalayan flowers.
At 14,100 ft, this moderate trek is ideal for trekkers who want dramatic scenery without extreme technical difficulty. Most days involve steady ascents on well-defined paths, with the highlight being a full day inside the valley itself.
Best season
The valley is accessible from July to September, when monsoon rains trigger the bloom. Peak flower season typically runs from mid-July through August. September offers clearer skies and fewer crowds, though some species begin to fade.
Who is this trek for?
- First-time Himalayan trekkers comfortable with 5–6 hours of walking per day
- Nature lovers and photographers drawn to alpine flora
- Pilgrims combining the trek with a visit to Hemkund Sahib
What to expect on the trail
The route begins at Govindghat and climbs through Ghangaria, the last inhabited settlement before the valley. From here, day hikes take you into the core zone — a protected area where over 600 species of flowers, waterfalls, and glaciers create an otherworldly setting.
Himalayan Ibex runs small groups with experienced local guides, Leave No Trace practices, and enough time at each camp to enjoy the mountains without rushing.
