Valley of Flowers Trek Itinerary: 6-Day Day-by-Day Plan
A practical 6-day Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib itinerary covering Joshimath, Govindghat, Ghangaria, permits, distance, and altitude.
Why six days works well
Valley of Flowers is often sold as a short trek, but rushing it means less time in the meadow and a harder Hemkund Sahib day. A 6-day itinerary gives you buffer for monsoon delays, a full day inside the UNESCO valley, and a separate day for Hemkund Sahib at 14,100 ft.
Day 1 — Reach Joshimath
Travel to Joshimath (via Rishikesh / Haridwar). Most groups overnight here for rest and kit checks. Altitude is modest, so this day is mainly about settling in after the road journey.
Day 2 — Joshimath to Govindghat, trek toward Ghangaria
Drive to Govindghat, the trailhead. From here the path climbs along the Pushpawati river through forests and waterfalls toward Ghangaria. Many trekkers cover this as a long day walk; ponies and porters are available if needed.
Ghangaria is the last settlement before the valley and your base for the next two days.
Day 3 — Acclimatise in Ghangaria
Use this buffer for rest, short walks, and permit formalities. Entry permits for Valley of Flowers are issued at the forest checkpost near Ghangaria — carry a government-issued photo ID.
Monsoon schedules slip. A spare day here often saves the whole trip.
Day 4 — Valley of Flowers day trek
Hike from Ghangaria into the national park. The trail is gradual and well-defined. Once inside, you walk through alpine meadows, streams, and flower beds — over 600 species have been recorded in the park.
Return to Ghangaria the same day. Overnight camping inside the core zone is not allowed.
Day 5 — Hemkund Sahib
An optional but highly recommended extension. The climb from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib is steeper and shorter in distance but higher in effort. The glacial lake and Gurudwara sit at about 14,100 ft.
Only attempt this if you feel well after Day 4. Descend to Ghangaria by evening.
Day 6 — Return to Govindghat and drive out
Trek down to Govindghat and continue by road toward Joshimath / Rishikesh. Build flex into travel plans — monsoon landslides can slow the Joshimath road.

Who this itinerary suits
First-time Himalayan trekkers with decent fitness, nature and photography travellers, and anyone combining the flower valley with Hemkund Sahib. It is not a technical climb, but slippery monsoon trails and altitude still demand preparation.
