Best Time to Visit Valley of Flowers: Month-by-Month Bloom Guide
Find the best month to trek Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand. Compare July peak bloom, August colours, and September skies for flowers, rain, and crowds.
When should you go?
Valley of Flowers National Park is open only from June to early October. Outside this window the park closes to protect the alpine ecosystem. Within those months, the experience changes week by week — bloom density, rain, and visibility all shift.
If you want maximum flowers, aim for mid-July to mid-August. If you prefer clearer views and fewer crowds, late August into September is often better.
June — park opens, bloom begins
The park typically opens around mid-June. Early flowers appear at lower stretches of the valley, but the full carpet is still forming. Trails can be wet from snowmelt and early monsoon showers.
June suits trekkers who want quieter trails and do not mind a greener, less colourful meadow. Hemkund Sahib is usually accessible, though residual snow can linger on the upper path.
July — peak bloom begins
By mid-July the valley transforms. Hundreds of species — blue poppies, cobra lilies, Himalayan balsam, anemones — start carpeting the meadows at around 11,000 ft.
Expect regular rain. Pack a solid rain jacket, dry bags, and quick-dry layers. Flower density is excellent, and this is when most photographers plan their visit.
August — fullest colour
August is widely considered the best overall month. Bloom is at its richest across the valley floor, and the monsoon keeps the landscape lush. Waterfalls along the Govindghat–Ghangaria trail run strong.
Crowds are highest in the second half of August, especially around weekends and holidays. Book stays in Ghangaria early if you are travelling independently.
September — clearer skies, fading bloom
Rain eases. Views of surrounding peaks open up more often. Some flower species begin to fade, but many alpine blooms remain and the trail feels less crowded.
September is ideal if you want Valley of Flowers scenery with better photography light and a calmer pace. Temperatures start to drop toward the end of the month.
Early October — last window
The park usually closes around the first week of October. Late bloomers linger, but colour is patchier. Cold mornings are common. Only go this late if dates are fixed and you accept a quieter, less floral valley.
