How to Reach Valley of Flowers from Delhi, Rishikesh & Haridwar
Step-by-step guide to reaching Valley of Flowers via Joshimath and Govindghat — flights, trains, road distance, monsoon tips, and last-mile trek options.
The short answer
You cannot drive into Valley of Flowers. The standard route is:
Delhi / Rishikesh / Haridwar → Joshimath → Govindghat → trek to Ghangaria → day hike into the valley.
Ghangaria is the last village. From there, Valley of Flowers is a day trek; overnight stays inside the park are not permitted.
By air
The nearest major airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED), Dehradun. From Dehradun, continue by road to Rishikesh and then Joshimath (roughly 10–12 hours depending on traffic and monsoon conditions).
Delhi (DEL) is often more convenient for international and long-haul domestic connections. From Delhi, most travellers take an overnight train or drive/bus to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then continue to Joshimath the next day.
By train
Haridwar and Rishikesh are the practical railheads. Popular options from Delhi include overnight trains to Haridwar. From the station, hire a shared taxi or take a bus toward Joshimath via Srinagar (Garhwal) and Karnaprayag.
Build one buffer night into monsoon itineraries — road delays are common in July and August.
By road from Delhi
Delhi to Joshimath is roughly 500–550 km and usually takes 12–16 hours with stops. Many groups break the journey:
- Delhi → Rishikesh / Haridwar (overnight)
- Rishikesh → Joshimath (full day drive)
- Joshimath → Govindghat (short drive to trailhead)
Self-drive is possible outside peak monsoon, but shared taxis and tempo travellers are widely used and often less stressful on mountain roads.
Govindghat to Ghangaria
From Govindghat, the trek to Ghangaria is about 9–13 km depending on the exact start point and route used that season. Expect 5–7 hours of walking.
Options:
- Trek with a daypack
- Hire a porter for your bag
- Use a pony for part or all of the ascent (common for first-timers and families)
The trail follows the river, passes waterfalls, and can be slippery after rain. Good shoes with grip matter more here than fancy gear.
Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers
The next morning, hike from Ghangaria into the national park. Carry your permit and ID. Spend the day in the meadows and return to Ghangaria before evening.
Hemkund Sahib is a separate steep day hike from the same base.
Monsoon travel tips
- Check Joshimath road updates before you leave Rishikesh
- Keep one spare day for landslides or heavy rain
- Avoid night driving on hill roads in peak monsoon
- Confirm Ghangaria lodging before you start the trek in busy August weekends
