Why timing matters on Kedarkantha

Kedarkantha sits at 12,500 ft in Uttarakhand's Govind Pashu Vihar region. The trail is accessible year-round, but the experience changes dramatically with the season — especially the snow cover that makes this trek famous.

December to February — peak winter

This is classic Kedarkantha season. Fresh snowfall blankets the pine forests around Juda Ka Talab, and summit day often means walking through knee-deep powder under a clear sky.

Expect daytime temperatures around 0°C to 8°C at base camp and well below freezing at the summit before dawn. Nights are cold — proper winter gear is non-negotiable.

March to April — the transition

Snow begins to melt at lower elevations while the upper trail can still hold good cover. Days are longer and slightly warmer. This window suits trekkers who want snow without the harshest cold.

May to June — green meadows

Snow retreats above 11,000 ft. The trail turns lush green, wildflowers appear, and the summit views remain spectacular — just without the winter wonderland aesthetic.

What we recommend

For first-time snow trekkers, mid-December through February offers the most iconic Kedarkantha experience. March departures are excellent if you prefer milder nights.
