About the Great Lakes of Kashmir trek

The Great Lakes trek is a legendary alpine circuit through the meadows and ridgelines of Kashmir, linking seven high-altitude lakes — Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangbal among them. Over eight days, you cross mountain passes, camp beside glacial lakes, and walk through some of the most photogenic terrain in the Indian Himalaya.

Best season

July to September offers the best weather and access. Snow on the Gadsar Pass and high camps typically clears by early July. August brings wildflowers across the meadows; September offers crisp air and fewer trekkers.

Who is this trek for?

  • Experienced trekkers comfortable with long days and pass crossings
  • Photographers and nature enthusiasts seeking remote alpine lakes
  • Adventurers drawn to Kashmir's meadow-and-lake landscape

What to expect on the trail

Starting from Sonamarg, the trail climbs through Nichnai and Vishansar before crossing the Gadsar Pass. Each day reveals a new lake or meadow, with camps set in locations that feel far removed from civilisation. The final descent through Gangbal to Naranag completes a full circuit of Kashmir's alpine heartland.
